Steamed Rice Recipe

Preparation time: 5 minutes
Total cooking time: 12-15 minutes
Recipe serves 4-6

Ingredients

2 ½ cups jasmine rice
A few drops of oil (optional)

  1. Place the rice in a fine strainer and wash it thoroughly under cold, running water until the water runs clear.

  1. Place the rice in a heavy-based pan. Add enough cold water to come about 3 cm above the rice. Add the oil to the pan and bring water to a gentle boil over a medium heat.

  1. Boil until the water is level with the rice and tunnels or bubbles appear; cover pan. Turn heat as low as possible; cook for 10 minutes. Shaking the pan from time to time. Remove pan from the heat and set aside for 5 minutes before serving.

Hint
As a general rule with jasmine rice, the ratio is 2 cups of washed rice to 3 cups of water. 1 cup of uncooked rice yields 3 cups of rice after cooking. Washing the rice removes excess starch- this helps to keep the grains separate when cooked. Adding oil to the water also assists in keeping the grains separate. When cooking rice by absorption method, don’t stir during cooking and don’t remove the lid.

You can also use a rice cooker.
